The origins of this seaside village probably date back to the High Middle Ages. In ancient times its almost uninhabited area was under the jurisdiction of the Etruscan town of Marcina, very probably the Vietri sul Mare of today.
Salerno is situated on the gulf of the same name, straddling the splendid Amalfitan Coast and the charming archaeological excavations of Paestum. It is a very important chief town with a population of approx 150,000.
Perhaps it was the mermaids, who according to the Greeks inhabited these very waters, who endowed the gulf of Sorrento the capacity to enchant the tourists of every period and nationality.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, it was the first city to restore trade relations with the West and the East transporting and importing many exotic products into Italy, such as carpets, coffee and paper. It had its own currency, the tarì.
